On the DIY tip, instead of spending half your trust fund on curtains, make paper cut-out window coverings. Here’s the most aggressive of the whimsical, Color Me Katie making one for her bathroom. This project is totally scaleable.

How to be Whimsical: Weekday Mornings

Mornings are the most important part of the day, mostly because they involve breakfast. Mornings are for leisure; a way of infusing a bit of the weekend into each day you have to go out and earn your keep. As such, make sure you have at least two hours set aside before work to brew coffee, eat a full breakfast, skim the NY Times headlines (blog reading is for work hours) and style your bangs properly. Breakfast is the most important meal in the whimsical lifestyle. After you leave the house, you’re probably only going to eat macarons and candy and Izze juice, so it is imperative that you pack your nutrients into your morning meal.

If you don’t drink caffeine, Sleepy Time tea is totally OK to drink in the morning.
Shower first and put your hair in curlers. Put on a robe and walk around with an oversize mug and pretend you’re a Golden Girl.
Have a meaningful conversation with your boyf/hubs over whole-wheat strawberry pancakes.
English muffins must only be topped with butter, marmalade or lemon curd.
Make use of your tea cup collection and drink whole milk from them.
Pugs need breakfast too!
A muffin is not a meal — put an egg on it.
Never rush in the morning. Rushing is the number one culprit behind needing mental health days.

Ask your boyfriend if you should cut your bangs or grow them out
Reupholster your couch in velvet — perfect for face nuzzling when the cat has better things to do.
Channel a Fitzgerald heroine: Eat tomato sandwiches while reading the Sunday paper. Alcoholic husband not included.
Take a long walk, crunching leaves and humming, to clear your head for the first full work week after the glitz and bustle of the holidays.

Hello, lovelies! Isn’t New Year’s just the most whimsical of holidays? Glitter, champagne, nothing really concrete to celebrate, red lipstick and made-in-China party favors! It’s enough to make you swoon! While we’re all still picking the glitter and confetti out of our hair, let’s think on our New Year’s resolutions for 2012. Here’s a list to get you started:

Do a juice fast.
Paint one wall in your bedroom bright pink and cover it with prints of Instagram photos.
Take a French class and do your assignments while eating a brie tartine. Give yourself extra credit for time spent in front of the mirror practicing making Audrey Tatou faces.
Find a pen pal and befriend an octogenarian.
Redesign your blog layout.
Throw yourself a Bored to Death Brooklyn scavenger hunt birthday party.
